Review-

Story wise this movie has nothing new to offer. Bunch of superheroes trying to save the world by stopping evil supervillains. But this movie gets all the things that you expect from a marvel movie right. There are good emotions, funny scenes, cool action sequences and visual effects.

It is definitely a lot better than any of the recent Marvel movies and a fun watch. There is an emotional backstory for Rocket which is heartwarming. This movie also didn’t involve a lot of characters from other movies and has stuck to the story without any deviations.

With this movie, James Gunn proved that if Marvel gets the basics right, it can make a fun movie without complex storylines or disturbing multiple universes.

Performances

Chris Pratt as Peter Quill or Starlord is funny as usual. He brings a lot of laughs trying to get over Gamora. He has mostly been used for funny scenes in this movie and does a great job.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora has done a great job. She acted well especially in scenes where she is in a moral dilemma whether to go away from Guardians or to stay and help them.

Karen Gillan as Nebula was good. She has a good screen space in this movie. She also does action sequences well in the movie.

Chukwudi Iwuji as High Evolutionary was decent. He shouts a lot in the movie and his character is designed as a stereotypical Supervillan. I do not know if this has been done intentionally but I didn’t like the way his character was designed.

Will Poulter as Adam Warlock was good. He has less screen space but he has done a good job and can be a great addition for this franchise in future.

Dave Bautista as Drax is either funny or Emotional or both. He has got good screen space in the movie but the emotions of the scenes were repetitive. He did what was necessary. Nothing special.

Bradley Cooper as Rocket. This was a surprise. The backstory of the rocket was very good which demanded great voice modulation. Bradley Cooper has done a great job.

Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord had a cameo role. He was good.

Vin Diesel as Groot, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and other characters have performed well.

Technical departments

Story and Direction by James Gunn – He has saved Marvel. The recent criticism on Marvel was that the characters and stories were not relatable anymore and a lot of things were happening across the multiverse without any emotional quotient.

He has done a good job in reducing the number of characters present in the movie and presenting the movie without any deviations.

Cinematography by Henry Braham is brilliant. There are a lot of single shot long action sequences which were picturized really well in the movie. There are no shaky camera movements even in complex action sequences which is great to watch.

Music by John Murphy deserves a special mention. Guardians of the Galaxy music is always special. There are a lot of retro tracks embedded in the movie which fade in/out with ease.

Editing by Greg D’Auria and Fred Raskin was decent. The initial portion of the film takes time to pick up. Other than that, there are no complaints on editing department.

Highlights of the movie-

Rocket’s backstory

Funny scenes

Action Sequences

Emotional Scenes

What could have been better?

Villain characterization

Pacing in the initial parts of movie

Thin storyline

Final Verdict

You will surely enjoy the movie if you are a Marvel fan. In fact you will also be relieved that Marvel finally has made a decent movie after many years.

For an average movie watcher, it is still a fun watch.

Marvel is recovering…
